A fasting urine sample should be used. It can be taken after arriving into the hospital; we will provide you sterile glassware. If you bring the urine sample into laboratory, it should be taken from the middle portion during the urination and put in a clean container. Please refrain from consuming beetroot, chocolates, coffee and sweets the day before the test.

Please rinse well your mouth, take a deep breath, slightly bend forward, cough and split the mucus into the container without keeping it in your mouth.

Please let us know if you are having any metal part inside your body such as:

  • Spine pins and needles
  • Hip or knee replacement pins and implants
  • Metal parts in heart (pacemaker, valve replacement) and so on

How to prepare for the procedure?
Do not wear tight clothing with metal fastening (buttons, zipper)
The instructions on eating before the MRI depend on the type of the actual MRI test. In some cases 8-12 hour fasting is required. If you have not been warned about it, then you can take food and medications as usual.
In some cases, a contrast substance is required to be taken or injected before the MRI procedure. The radiologist or the technician will ask you if you have any allergies for such kind of substances, for any other medications and food; if you suffer from sever chronic conditions or had recently an operation. Patients with severe kidney diseases and some other conditions cannot have the contrast substances.
If you are pregnant, you must inform the doctor and the technician. MRIs have been performed since 1980 and there is no evidence so far, that MRI has any negative results on pregnant women and the fetus. However, this diagnostic procedure uses very strong magnetic field, thus pregnant women should undergo MRI only when it is necessary.
You should take off jewelry and other accessories. Metal and electronic tools interrupt the MRI’s magnetic field, thus do not take with you into the MRI room the following items:

  • Jewelry, watches, bank cards, hearing devices
  • Hair clip, metal buttons, zipper
  • Removable dentures
  • Pen, jack-knife, keys, eye glasses
  • Earrings, rings, bracelets, necklaces

Patients with metal based implants can undergo most MRI tests, however there are some implants that do not permit testing, such as:

  • Installed internal defibrillator or pacemaker
  • Cochlear implants
  • Cerebrovascular clips

You should inform the technician about certain treatments or any electronic devices that you wear. Devices, such as listed below, may interfere with MRI and pose certain risks.

  • Artificial heart valves
  • Implanted injection catheters
  • Internally installed electronic devices such as pacemakers
  • Artificial limbs or metallic joint prostheses
  • Installed nerve stimulators
  • Stent, surgical clips, metal pins

Chest and abdominal Computer Tomography

  • Fasting for 5-6 hours prior testing is required.
  • Take off some or all of your clothing and wear loose clothing. Remove any metal objects, such as a belt or jewelry and mobile phones, which might interfere with image results.
  • If contrast is required for the scan, contrast test will be done in 15-20 minutes prior the test. If allergic reaction occurs, scan with contrast will not be done.
  • Patient shall read through and sign the permission slip for scan with contrast.
  • Depending on the scans, contract can be taken orally or rectally.
  • If bladder and pelvic organs are being tested, bladder must have enough urine.
  • If patient is in severe or critical condition, the doctor in charge and nurse shall accompany the patient.
  • Depending on outpatient or inpatient services, patient shall bring the hospital ID card or medical record, respectively.

If you take regularly hypertension medications, please make sure that on the day of the procedure you have taken it. However, if you take diabetic medication, you should skip it on the day of the procedure.
